The goal of the CSNS Socioeconomic Fellowship is to train residents to gain competence in and understanding on the full spectrum of socioeconomic issues impacting on neurosurgery. Specific goals to be obtained by the end of the fellowship include the following:
Patient Care
- The skill to appropriately integrate socioeconomic factors into neurosurgical practice in developing and implementing patient treatment plans
- Understand the complexity of health insurance and the impact on patient care
- Acquire comprehension of the differential impact of socioeconomic factors on patient outcomes and treatment
Medical Knowledge
- Understand the structure and function of the CSNS and the Washington Committee
- Demonstrate comprehension of socioeconomic issues within neurosurgery including workforce, medical liability, coding/reimbursement, and medical practices
- Author or co-author a CSNS resolution, white paper or similar effort through a standing or ad hoc committee
- Participate actively in CSNS plenary sessions, standing committee and ad hoc committee
- Utilize an investigatory and analytical approach to socioeconomic problems impacting neurosurgery
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
- Develop evidence-based medical practice skills
- Serve as a resource for socioeconomic information and education for their residency program as well as regional/state neurosurgical society
- Gain an appreciation of the importance of life-long learning for career success and maintenance of certification
Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Develop a high level of specialized interpersonal communication skills necessary for success within the CSNS, Washington Committee and organized neurosurgery
- Demonstrate the ability to work as part of a organized neurosurgery
Professionalism
- Demonstrate a high level of professionalism at all times
- Demonstrate commitment to ethical principles, respect and integrity
Systems-Based Practice
- Demonstrate an understanding of the administrative and financial aspects of neurosurgery practice
- Understand factors that affect the practice of cost-effective neurosurgery
- Commit to working with others to improve neurosurgical care
- Demonstrate understanding of legal issues in neurosurgery
- Demonstrate a high level of understanding regarding practice types, medical economics and medical politics
Specific Requirements
- Attend two consecutive CSNS meetings
- Actively participate in a standing committee for 1 year
- Actively participate on an ad hoc committee for 1 year
- Develop at least 1 educational program for own residency program, the CSNS website, or a state neurosurgical society
- Complete at least 1 project as a principle participant through a standing or ad hoc committee, for the Bulletin peer-review section, for the CSNS website, or similar
- Establish an ongoing mentor/mentee relationship with a member of the CSNS/Washington Committee to include regular meetings, delineation of specific goals, and evaluation
